Adaptive Greening ·

Adaptive Greening is a movement to be presented in a global exhibition in Toronto, New York, and Shenzhen in Fall 2009 proposing a massive change in the way that we look – or fail to – at one of the primary determinants of climate change, our built environment. With buildings contributing to 40% of our emissions, that on par with the estimate of cars – as most citizens have something to say about idling vehicles, or oversize SUV’s, we want to bring architecture into the general vocabulary of one of two main determinants of our environmental health. It explores architecture in a more holistic and inter-disciplinary way – affecting not only our urban and suburban landscapes – but rather all facets of our lives including: health, social development, economics, environment, technology, communications, and security. In this provocative and unconventional pop culture exhibit, visitors are brought into contact with the consequences and repercussions of our current building practices, and essentially what our world will look like if we do build “green” and consequently, what will look like if we don’t.

If we are going to continue building higher into the sky, we must look at our cities as we do forests, and make sure that the tallest trees are contributing the most back to our environment, serving as symbols of our generation’s advancement rather than our regression. adaptive greening is a window into the consequences of irresponsible architecture and the advantages of smart design.

Our intention is to create a global movement in looking at design (architecture specifically) as a holistic discipline that affects all facets of our lives, and show how we must remove it from its “unreachable” status to something that the everyday citizen is cognizant of. En masse, we hope to put architecture (and green architecture) into the lexicon of not only the engaged young professional but also to the stay-at-home mom, the university student, and the CEO. As sustainability has entered the vocabulary of the general public, and already taken on a very edgy persona of its own, we so hope to bring adaptive greening into that same lexicon, with its own provocative and avant-garde cachet.

The exhibition, book, and motion picture will highlight architecture as the conduit between the first, second, and third worlds, and its power as a universal medium of communication, of solution-building, of peace-building, and represents a forward thinking generation. By engaging millions of global citizens worldwide, and bringing these questions to the forefront in an unconventional, provocative way, we hope to be at the forefront of a global discussion on design, our environment, and our future. With a budget of $3 million – the realized project will go beyond the scale of a general exhibition and leave a mark on the global consciousness of the current generation.
